Mocha Pro Unveils AI-Powered Rotoscoping and Masking
The 2025 release from Boris FX makes short work out of daily VFX tasks with two groundbreaking AI-driven features and improved 3D camera solves.
Boris FX Mocha Pro, renowned throughout the visual effects industry for its award-winning planar tracking and masking features, is set to transform how artists, compositors, and video editors work. The new release introduces a simple AI-based workflow that saves significant time on all projects, including motion tracking, 3D matchmoves, and object removal.
“The Boris FX team is thrilled to introduce the post-production community to two new, industry-leading AI tools with the addition of Object Brush and Matte Assist to Mocha Pro,” states Boris Yamnitsky, President and CEO of Boris FX. “These best-in-class tools set a new standard for efficiency and precision in VFX workflows. Artists can now use Object Brush to instantly isolate objects and create editable splines, while Matte Assist automatically generates animated vector-based mattes with unparalleled accuracy. Together, these cutting-edge tools deliver unmatched speed and reliability for tasks like garbage masks and track mattes, earning their place as must-have tools for all post-production editors and artists.”
What’s New
Object Brush: The AI-powered tool allows artists to isolate objects with a single click, instantly generating editable splines that can be tracked across frames using any of Mocha Pro’s traditional planar or PowerMesh trackers. Paired with the Area Brush tool, users can quickly refine selections on tasks like garbage masks, object isolation, and more.
Matte Assist: Included in the new Matte module, Matte Assist employs AI to generate animated vector mattes from a single input. These automated masks can be used across Mocha Pro modules for tracking, object removals, and 3D camera solves. Users can dilate or shrink created vector masks depending on a project’s needs.
3D Moving Object Solves: Building on the recent addition of SynthEyes 3D tracking technology, Mocha Pro 2025 adds the ability to solve for moving objects within 3D scenes. Artists can combine planar and PowerMesh tracking data to generate accurate meshes and point clouds for complex 3D tracking shots. Solve data integrates seamlessly with popular VFX applications via USD, Alembic, and FBX exports. After Effects users can export solve data in the Mocha Pro UI or generate it directly inside After Effects with the Mocha Pro plugin.
Streamlined Data Exports: A redesigned export dialogue allows artists to export Mocha Pro tracking data more easily using a sleek interface that combines tracking, shape, and 3D data exports in one place. Users can select data export options by popular host application presets, save favorites, and work faster with an “Export Again” feature.
User-Friendly Improvements: Artist-focused updates include the option to install a new version of Mocha Pro with a preferences crossover, eliminating the need to reconfigure workflows and greater control using new keyboard shortcuts and contextual menus. The release also complies with VFX Reference Platform 2023, allowing seamless integration into modern pipelines.
“Getting full-body roto in seconds with just a few clicks, all within Mocha Pro, is nothing short of revolutionary,” remarks Jeff Kyle, Flame artist at Assembly. “The ability to create hold-out mattes for complex occluded tracking is impressive and very effective, but I can also see clear use cases for the AI Matte Assist to hold up as standalone roto for my high-end commercial finishing work in Flame. The hours this will save me and my team make upgrading to this release a no-brainer.”
Kyle continues, “While I’m no stranger to SynthEyes, object tracking always felt like a mystery—until now! Mocha Pro 2025 brilliantly combines planar/PowerMesh tracking and camera solving, two features I already know, to demystify object tracking. It was much easier than expected, and I’m incredibly excited to have a new workflow in my wheelhouse.”
